Meet Perth’s Favourite Tour Guide

At Constellation Apartments in beautiful Margaret River, we receive guests from all over the world, including many Australians visiting Western Australia for the very first time.

Our fully licensed luxury holiday accommodation is the perfect place to get away from it all and immerse oneself in the remarkable natural scenery that we’re blessed with an abundance of here. And to help more people discover the immense environmental beauty that’s helped to make Margaret River one of Australia’s most popular holiday destinations, we’ve partnered with several leading tour groups, including The Margaret River Discovery Company.

MRDCO is an award-winning tour company conducted by a tour guide with expert local knowledge that enables holidaymakers to get the very most from their time in this beautiful part of Australia.

Western Australia’s Favourite Tour Leader

Sean Blocksidge, the owner-operator of MRDCO, offers luxury wine and scenic tours of the local areas that take holidaymakers off the beaten track and into the spellbinding grandeur of the Margaret River area and the breathtaking scenery it’s synonymous with.

Once a successful manager of an established local winery and five-star resort, Sean now specialises in providing luxury tours, as well as photography. You may have heard that he was the winner of the G’Day USA Competition in which his iconic photograph, Sunset Kangaroos, took first place in the Best Photo category, edging out one of Hollywood hunk Chris Hemsworth flexing against a distinctively Australian landscape.

We recently sat down with Sean, Western Australia’s most famous tour leader, to ask him a few questions which you can read below.

Are you familiar with clients coming to you from Constellation Apartments? Have you noticed any trends in the tours they choose?

All the guests I have had from Constellation have been awesome. They are usually 30-60 somethings and wanting to something a bit more special than the standard winery bus tour. That’s why we call it ‘the tour for people who don’t do tours!” I offer a few different tour options but the Discovery Tour is definitely the best one. If offers a great combination of stunning scenery and activities you couldn’t normally access on your own, plus a very special winery lunch experience at one of the hottest wineries down here at the moment.

How far in advance should guests book their tour?

I tend to sell out a few weeks in advance and about a month in advance during busy season. Most days I turn away 20+ people a day, so if you were thinking of leaving it to the last minute, it probably won’t go well.

You have some incredible images on your Instagram page. Do you take these photos yourself? If so, would you mind letting me know a bit about your background in photography? Are you self-taught? What inspires you? Do you have any good tips on taking travel photography?

Yeah I always say I started my business at the worst time (at the start of the 2008 global financial crisis) but also the best time. The start of a social media revolution. I went to the #1 thing to do in Margaret River on Tripadvisor and the next day my business went nuts. The phone and email didn’t stop. It was then I realised that social media was a great way of connecting with my audience, so I started taking daily pics of things we see and do on tour. I love sharing the Margaret River region and it becomes a daily challenge to get a great picture that captures what happened today. It’s also very motivating as it makes me go out exploring to find the best sunset locations, or cockatoo habitats, or interesting locals.

What was the most recent and exciting thing to happen to you on one of your tours (or even in your personal explorations)?

I recently took a picture of two kangaroos in the moonlight and the image won Best Social Media pic of 2017 and scored me a trip to America to participate in the red carpet event G’Day LA. I’ve met a lot of celebrities doing my tour and I don’t normally get star struck but I got a bit overwhelmed in the glitz of Hollywood. Scored a selfie with Hoges and stood 57cm away from the aura of Nicole Kidman.

Why choose Margaret River?

Hands down the most spectacular and most consistent wine region on the planet. Epic scenery matched with some of the worlds best Chardonnay’s and Cabernets. It’s a wine paradise! …… And if you don’t like wine, it’s a paradise that just happens to produce wine.

Award Winning Photograph by Sean Blocksidge

As you can see, Sean, as the winner of numerous prestigious awards, including the No.1 Margaret River tour from 2008 to 2016, knows what he’s on about and he’s an indispensable source of advice when it comes to local wineries, restaurants and adventure tours. If you’re looking for an adventure experience that combines some of the very best wineries in the region, luxury 4WD transport and the expert knowledge of the most famous tour guide in the state, then Sean’s tours are perfect for you.

As he mentions in the interview, his Discovery Tour is one of the most popular tours he offers and the feedback from our guests has been fantastic. This 5½ hour tour commences with a canoe ride down the Margaret River before checking the top surf breaks in the region, getting to know the local Aboriginal history and then lunching at Fraser Gallop Estate, one of the most celebrated wineries in the region. The day tour finishes with a 4WD adventure to the Wilyabrup Cliffs, one of the most spectacular sections of the Cape to Cape track. With special government approval to use a track offering the most strikingly beautiful clifftop views, this is a vista that you won’t forget anytime soon.
