Back in 1967, a cardiologist named Tom Cullity planted the first vineyard in Margaret River on eight acres of land that he bought for a grand total of $600. Dr Cullity believed the region was ripe for wine cultivation based on research conducted by Dr John Gladstones about a decade earlier. But one can’t help but wonder if those earlier pioneers in local viniculture could envisage what an international sensation the Margaret River valley would become in the following decades.
Fast forward 50 years, and Margaret Valley is a household name across Australia – and for wine enthusiasts around the world. Once a sleepy region that was one known for its statuesque hardwood forests, dairy production, enthusiastic surfing community and little else, the Margaret River valley is now producing some of the most talked-about wines in the world.

Why the Margaret River Valley Is Perfect for Cultivating Wine
There are plenty of reasons that the wines produced here are of such a high quality. This area is hugged by the ocean on three sides, and the winds that sweep into the valley travel over 1,000 km of open ocean before arriving. The result is an ideal maritime climate with the perfect mix of rain and sunshine for grape cultivation.
This is one of the most isolated grape-growing regions in the world. It’s refreshingly free of polluting winds and rain, meaning that the vineyards cultivated here produce some of the purest, unadulterated wine varieties available.
Today, the Margaret River valley is famous for its Cabernet and Chardonnay grapes. It’s also well-known for its signature blend of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc grapes – which is a top seller for the region. But those are just the favourites. You’ll find a wide variety of wines available, with something to suit every palate or occasion.
Margaret River Valley: The Heartland of Premium Wine in Australia
Over the years, Australia has developed several prominent wine-producing regions, but none have the international clout of the Margaret River valley. Today, there are more than 200 wineries in the region, and together they account for roughly 3 per cent of Australia’s total wine grape harvest.
But don’t let that modest figure deceive you. Some 20 per cent of Australia’s premium wines originates here. The secret to the region’s success lies in the science that was used to develop it. It all began with Harry Olmo, who is well-known in viticultural circles for the work he did with the Chardonnay varietal. The time he spent here in the valley in the 1950s laid the foundation for the local wine industry as we know it today.
The aforementioned Dr Gladstones began researching the local climate and soil in the late 1950s and early 1960s. His geological surveys encouraged many viticulture enthusiasts to try growing wine grapes here despite the fact that the nearby Swan Valley was experiencing some early growing pains.
As the region began to gain international attention in the 1970s, Robert Mondavi – the world-famous wine magnate – began expressing an interest in planting grapes here. He came on as a consultant for local vineyards, and the rest is history.
